GOZDNA IN GEOLOŠKA UČNA POT PEKEL

FOREST AND GEOLOGICAL NATURE TRAIL PEKEL

The nature trail is located in the Ponikovski kras nature park. It leads through the forests that surround the karstic cave Pekel, which is a natural monument. The trail is circular, starting in front of the cave and ending there as well. The trail is 1980 m long and can be walked in a little over an hour, with a height difference of 129 m. It was established in 1984 by the Celje Forestry Service, and nowadays it is maintained by the foresters of the Celje Forestry Society and the Forestry Institute of Slovenia, the local unit of Žalec.

Towards the settlement of Ponikva there is a national monument, the spring of the Ponikvica brook, where there is a former clothes-washing site. From its spring, Ponikvica makes a short distance to the sinkholes in Loke, where it sinks into the subterranean caves of Pekel and emerges to the surface as the Peklenščica brook. In the vicinity of the sinkholes there is a drinking fountain with spring water from Ločanka.

Along the nature trail there are 10 info points about the relationships in the forest and nature, different roles of forests, forest birds and other animals, the life of trees, forest floor, the impact of pests and natural disasters on forests and karst with karstic phenomena. On the top of the trail, at Požerišče, you can sit in the cool shade of oak and pine trees and listen to bird symphony.

Take a walk along the trail, guided by the inquisitive little owl called Brihta (eng. Smarty). Together, you can discover numerous mysteries that the forest never runs out of.
